For nearly ten years, Russell Simmons and his wife, Kimora Lee Simmons have been the king and queen of hip-hop culture. Now the monarchy is breaking down. The couple announced today that they have split up and have been separated "for some time."
Many gossip sites predicted that the separation announcement would be made today and Kimora?s reps were the first to admit to the break up. Russell followed up later with a statement that read, "Kimora and I will remain committed parents and caring friends with great love and admiration for each other. We will also continue to work side by side on a daily basis as partners in all of our businesses." Russell admitted that, though the separation has been in effect for a while, he and Kimora have continued to share a residence.
Russell, the co-founder of Def Jam records, met Kimora when she was a 17-year-old model in 1992. They married in 1998 after a long courtship. Though Russell is often regarded as the businessman of the couple, Kimora is a success in her own right as the creator of the Baby Phat clothing line. The couple has two daughters together: Ming and Aoki.
