Chrissie HyndeNaming a pony skin bag after a rabid animal rights activist is like throwing a steaming plate of ribs down in front of ... well, a rabid animal rights activist. An up-and-coming designer has found themselves in hot water with Pretenders lead singer Chrissie Hynde and indeed, all of PETA after doing just that. While the designer swears this was intended as a compliment to her music, Chrissie is said to be livid that anything made from an animal's flesh be named after her. Also, she's not used to getting compliments, especially about her skin.

I think she's just being hypersensitive. I mean, it's been like 20 years since Chrissie and/or the Pretenders had a hit of any kind. You'd think she'd be flattered that anyone even remembered her name. However, perhaps the designer should change the name of that bag. I wouldn't want to be the one holding the pony skin bag when she kicks in the showroom door to mete out justice for her four-legged friends. She looks mad dog mean.

Perhaps another celebrity would be willing to step in as the face of the pony skin bag. Hilary Swank might be thrilled to lend her name to an upscale bag made from such supple, ultra-luxe hide. (This is not an endorsement.) And while American shoppers might be a bit taken back by the idea of using pony skin, I'd think such a bag would sell extremely well in Europe, where the animal activists don't have as strong a hold on the fashion industry. In France, horsemeat is a delicacy and no one has heard of the Pretenders. Go figure.
